Hello again…

During the past month I have been conducting an experiment to see just how legitimate the “Take our survey and earn a (fill in the blank) gift card FREE!” programs are.

I must admit they were pretty much what I expected, but with a few minor surprises.

First off, the routine works this way: You are promised a $50 (usually, sometimes more) gift card or other gift in exchange for filling out a survey *and* completing at least two offers they have in their endless pages of sign-up forms.  Keep in Mind that “completing” an offer can take weeks, especially in the case of credit-card offers, which, in order to complete, one must not only be approved, but also activate the card and make a certain dollar amount purchase on it before the ‘gift’ can be sent…Needless to say I have yet to receive any gift cards.

What I did receive, though, was over 645 emails sent to the address I used to sign up for special offers. That averages a bit over 21 a day for the month…so if you love getting email, please sign up for a few of these programs and you’ll stay busy reading for hours each day.

I’m not complaining…in the agreement one checks to participate it clearly states they are going to pass your name around like a cheap paperback in a cellblock, so there should be no surprises there.

What *did* surprise me, though, was the scope and, well, legitimacy of the offers. They were discounts from well-known brands for the most part, with a healthy scattering of horoscope offers (boy, Bethea must be making MILLIONS—she’s everywhere!), debt-relief (I guess they think if you’re desperate enough to be going through all their hoops just to get a restaurant discount you probably need it), big-name dating services (again, if you have enough spare time to be doing this stuff you probably don’t have the healthiest social life, they figure) and a whole slew of other recognizable companies offering discount promos. And absolutely not one of the ubiquitous porn-site offers…they’ve gotten so sneaky that I’ve found them in religious discussions and on many legitimate websites (they buy expired domains with prior link structures and voila! instant sleaze in your face without fear of prosecution)….sheesh.

Executive summary: Unless you LIKE getting tons of offers which, once responded to,  will spawn a myriad copies more quickly than an e coli culture in a warm petri dish, then by all means sign up for a free $50 gift card for the merchant of your choice. With a little work (and I mean VERY LITTLE) you could be getting hundreds if not thousands of offers each day, giving you something to do instead of finishing that resume you’ve been staring at for weeks now…

If you have a life already, though, they are just what they look like–email harvesters dressed up in Rachel Ray clothing “What’s Cooking, Baby?”
